Suzi Faiz

Suzy Faiz, born in Australia in 1991 and based in Amsterdam, works with painting and collage to expand the possibilities of abstraction. Drawing on a vocabulary of past painting styles, she reinterprets the historical avant-garde through a contemporary lens, bringing abstract, gestural and figurative elements into the same visual field.

Abstraction shaped by history, symbolism and colour

Faiz uses form and colour to illuminate hidden narratives, translating personal, historical and political concerns into visual language. Her paintings often allow loose painterly strokes to coexist with geometric and representational forms. In this series, themes of the occult appear through imagery from astrology, tarot and crystals, informed by her interest in spirituality and by queer modernist artists with mystical practices, including Pamela Colman Smith, Hilma af Klint and Agnes Pelton.
