TONY VAN AMSTERDAM
AN EXCLUSIVE SOLO EXHIBITION
Needing a counterpoint to his tattoo practice, artist Baary Ant. aka Tony Van Amsterdam began exploring expressionist painting in the winter of 2008 . In his words, “I felt like I was already pretty accomplished as a tattoo artist, but I also felt like there was so much more to explore, I was searching. When I stumbled onto abstract painting, I knew I was into something new and expansive for me, it really stuck.”
The introduction of lighting components into Tony’s work helped magnify his painting practice and give it an identifiable allure. “I was making work on canvas, and I still love the canvas texture and working on a single surface, but again, I was already comfortable with that and wanted something that added depth to the pieces. The lighting is a way to synthesize the technical attention that I need to succeed as a tattoo artist with the loose approach to painting that produces good abstraction. It also gives the work a real backlit POP!”, says Tony.
In Tonys work, color is king and the marriage between the painted surface and the backlit lighting components produce a myriad of color experiences.

FALL – Sidney Waerts (1976)
With his new exhibition FALL, Sidney Waerts shows the change he has undergone in recent years.
After the hustle and bustle of the city, a shift is taking place for Waerts. He chooses the silence and clarity that nature brings him. This inner journey is partly inspired by Sumi-e, the Japanese painting technique in which simplicity and spontaneity are guiding principles. Acrylic paint and Oriental ink create new possibilities for him. He also adds gold as an extra layer, symbolizing light and spiritual growth. This gives this series for Waerts a warmer and more optimistic character than his previous series.
´As a child I was always busy creating my own world,´ says Waerts. ´In the outdoors, I feel that freedom to shape my inner world. That corresponds to the search for my own essence. For example, when you can embrace the transience of autumn, you see that this period is connected to the growth of something new. It is a continuous flow of moving energy.´
