Handiedan ‘UBIQUITOUS’

UBIQUITOUS marks the first solo exhibition in the Netherlands by Dutch artist Handiedan.

For more than twenty years, the illustrated character Amelie has been a recurring presence within Handiedan’s work. First appearing in 2001, she has continued to surface throughout the artist’s drawings and collages, sometimes clearly visible and at other times almost disappearing into the layers surrounding her.

In UBIQUITOUS, Handiedan places Amelie at the centre for the first time. The exhibition explores the relationship that has developed between artist and character over more than two decades, and the way Amelie has grown alongside Handiedan’s own artistic practice.

The new works bring this personal story together with the visual language for which Handiedan is known. Vintage imagery, antique currency, stamps, sheet music, ornamental forms, and geometric structures are combined through hand cut and digital techniques, creating detailed compositions in which past and present continuously overlap.

By bringing a figure that has always been present into full view, UBIQUITOUS reveals a more personal layer within Handiedan’s work and gives new meaning to a character that has quietly accompanied her throughout her career.

UBIQUITOUS is on view from 3 October until 3 November 2026 at Ambassade Art Gallery, Oude Spiegelstraat 7, Amsterdam.
