In this exhibition, Ambassade Art Gallery brings together the dynamic work of contemporary artist Niels ‘Shoe’ Meulman and the expressive legacy of Theo Wolvecamp, a key figure in the postwar CoBrA movement. Though generations apart, both artists share a powerful commitment to the materiality of paint and the freedom of the gesture. Wolvecamp’s works, especially from his black and white period in the 1950s, are charged with primal energy, thick, impassioned brushstrokes that reflect a visceral, instinctive dialogue with the canvas. Today, Shoe continues that lineage of experimentation, moving beyond his origins in calligraffiti into a more abstract practice where the brushstroke becomes form itself. Using unconventional tools, brooms, mops, and custom-made instruments, he explores the same tensions between control and spontaneity that fascinated the CoBrA artists.

This exhibition not only invites viewers to consider the enduring influence of CoBrA on contemporary art, but also celebrates the Ambassade Hotel’s extensive CoBrA collection, one of the most significant in the Netherlands. By presenting Wolvecamp’s radical legacy alongside Shoe’s evolving practice, the exhibition opens a living conversation about freedom, material, and the expressive possibilities of the painted mark.
